Fullerton: Dogzilla & Brats Berlin

A fellow foodie friend was at the Best Buy Fullerton on Friday and sent this to me.  Its from 2 different trucks, yet they complimented each other… don’t you think so?

Irvine: The Lime Truck, Barcelona on the Go

My sister Becky is my weekly guest blogger, reporting on food trucks from the Teller & Michelson lunch lot in Irvine, CA.

There’s a reason why you have to wait in line if you want to eat at The Lime Truck on Wednesdays.

Every week, they’re always thinking outside of the box with innovative items to tantalize our taste buds. The chicken marsala taco (chicken with tomatoes and mushrooms) was a creative take on an Italian dish we all know and love. There was also New England gnocchi, a unique fusion of New England style clam chowder with Italian gnocchi. Brilliant!

In contrast, if you aren’t feeling adventurous, you can’t get any more tried and true than Barcelona on the Go’s top sirloin tacos: Two tacos topped with fresh corn salsa.  Comforting and delicious!

Irvine: Chomp Chomp Truck

The Chomp Chomp truck was at the Teller Lot, and I went for the wagyu beef skewers, which came with a slaw, rice cubes and peanut sauce. Delicious as always!

Today was one of those beautiful, sunny days where you’d rather be anywhere but inside the office.

Due to their increase in popularity and fan following, I hadn’t been to The Lime Truck in a while because the wait in line is always so long. Today, however, I arrived a little earlier than usual and was glad to see only a handful of people in front. I love their ceviche and knew right away I had to try their ahi poke, which is fresh diced tuna with crushed macadamia nuts, avocado drizzled with a little spicy salsa, served over a bed a fresh tortilla chips.

Best of luck to the Lime Truck and Seabirds as they represent OC in second season of The Great Food Truck Race!

Irvine: Ranchan Ramen

My sister Becky is my weekly guest blogger, reporting on food trucks

from the Teller & Michelson lunch lot in Irvine, CA.

Today’s truck gathering included BOTG, Lime Truck, Dos Chinos, Rancho A Go Go, Burnt Truck, Lee’s Philly, Bakery Truck and Oh For Sweet’s Sake. Piaggio’s was unable to attend today due to a private event they were hosting.

Last week,a mysterious bright pink truck pulled up to the lot just as I was leaving. Today, I discovered that it was a new (just a month-old!) truck called Ranchan Ramen. They took over the previous WYSS truck up in Los Angeles.

As their name suggests, the Ranchan Ramen truck serves different kinds of ramen with various toppings (corn, bamboo shoots, etc) you can add for an additional charge. They also serve different types of skewers and other commonly recognized Japanese appetizers. I ordered the “Ranchan Special” ramen and a side of their gyoza.

Ranchan Ramen is definitely experiencing common problems for a new truck. For starters, the very nice girl who took my order below wasn’t very familiar with the menu, and had to confirm with Eddie or Enrique when customers asked about their food. Then, there was a mix-up in the orders to where four of us waiting for our food had to wait a little longer before our orders were corrected. Eddie did apologize for the delay and I wasn’t in a rush to get back to the office, so it was not much of an inconvenience for me. I do wish them the best and hope they are able to work out the kinks as quickly as possible.

Irvine: Chomp Chomp, Rolling Sushi Van

My sister Becky is helping me out by being my weekly guest blogger.  Due to my busy schedule, I’m not able to attend the Teller lot on Wednesdays and she volunteered to provide a weekly report.

Today was a great showing for food trucks. Aside from the resident trucks, were guest trucks Chomp Chomp, Rolling Sushi Van, Rancho A Go Go and Bakery Truck. There was also a mysterious, nondescript bright pink truck that was circling for a parking space… but I didn’t have the time to venture to the other side to check it out.

I was happy to see Chomp Chomp today because they have not been back to the Teller Lot in a while. Apparently, the Teller Lot must be a popular gathering because I was told that there are only so many guest truck spots that the resident trucks can accept each Wednesday. Last time, they made an appearance, my husband was with me and he ordered their spicy crab burger. When I took a bite of his burger, I wanted my own and have been waiting for them to come back ever since. Today, I finally got to savor one all by myself!

The Rolling Sushi Van also makes infrequent appearences to the Teller Lot, and I really wanted their special chirashi bowl, but I knew it would be way too much food for lunch. It was a tough decision, but I decided to keep in the “spicy” theme and ordered their spicy tuna chips.

Irvine: Dos Chinos

My sister Becky is helping me out by being my weekly guest blogger.  Due to my busy schedule, I’m not able to attend the Teller lot on Wednesdays and she volunteered to provide a weekly report.

Several weeks ago, Dos Chinos tweeted that they were now serving Vietnamese Iced Coffee (or Cafe Sua Da) as part of their menu. I love Vietnamese Iced Coffee, but unfortunately, there are a lot of places that don’t serve it well.

My criteria for the perfect cup of cafe sua da is as follows:

  • They have to use real, condensed milk and not a CoffeeMate (or equivalent) substitute, which completely overpowers the drink;
  • The taste of coffee needs to be more prominent than the condensed milk;
  • Overall, the balance needs to be rich, bold and flavorful, not separated (as in, you can taste the separation of water, coffee and milk).
  • The best cafe sua da is best described as drinking liquid dark chocolate. Sublime!!

I’ve passed over ordering Dos Chinos coffee because I was admittedly leery they wouldn’t meet my expectation. That is, until today. I noticed they had changed the listing from “Vietnamese Iced Coffee” to “Super Strong Vietnamese Iced Coffee.”

The change in description piqued my curiousity, so I decided to give it a try. The result? Their coffee met all three of my criteria. It had a nice, thick quality to it and really had a well balanced flavor. Though, not the best I’ve tried, I would definitely order it again if I don’t have time to make it up to Little Saigon to get the good stuff.

As for their claims of begin “Super Strong?” Well, I’m not bouncing against the walls, but it has certainly helped me get through the rest of this afternoon much easier.

Irvine: Piaggio on Wheels, Rancho a Go Go

My sister Becky is helping me out by being my weekly guest blogger.  Due to my busy schedule, I’m not able to attend the Teller lot on Wednesdays and she volunteered to provide a weekly report.

Though last Sunday marked the first day of Spring, Mother Nature seemed to take her time to send us the sunshine we all missed. Today felt like Spring has finally arrived! The sun was out and so were the Teller Lot food trucks, which included Barcelona on the Go, Piaggio on wheels, The Lime Truck, Seabirds, Dos Chinos, Spudrunners, Baconmania, Oh For Sweet’s Sake and Rancho A Go Go.

My picnic-inspired lunch was the Milanesa sandwich from Piaggios, which consisted of thinly pounded chicken lightly breaded and fried with lettuce and tomatoes, and a side of their crispy chimi fries.  My co-worker’s outdoor BBQ-inspired lunch was “The Rhind” at Rancho A Go Go, which was a grilled cheese sandwich stuffed with pulled pork and BBQ sauce.

Though we couldn’t enjoy the full picnic or BBQ experience we wanted, we were thankful that the truck gathering gave us an excuse to head outside and enjoy the sunshine, even if it was just for a brief moment.

San Diego: Miho Gastrotruck

San Diego’s Miho Gastrotruck

Roasted Chicken Club

My friend in San Diego was baffled why I rave so much about food trucks. I told him that he has to just try it.

He located Miho Gastrotruck and tried the Roasted Chicken Club, a pepper roasted free range chicken with Duroc bacon, cheddar, local arugula, fried green tomato, avocado aioli inside a ciabatta bread.

I asked him if it was good, and he text back “He’ll be back”.

Irvine: Rolling Sushi Van

My sister Becky is helping me out by being my weekly guest blogger.  Due to my busy schedule, I’m not able to attend the Teller lot on Wednesdays and she volunteered to provide a weekly report.

This week’s guest trucks, aside from the usual five (BOTG, Piaggio, LimeTruck, Dos Chinos, Seabirds) were Lee’s Philly and Oh For Sweet’s Sake.

One of many great things about living in Southern California is the variety of authentic Asian cuisine. Unfortunately, whenever I travel to Europe, asian cuisine in countries such as Italy, France and Spain pales in comparison.

I’m heading out on vacation and will be spending the next few weeks in Italy.  I was super excited when Rolling Sushi Van tweeted that they would be at the Teller today, so I could get my last minute Asian food fix!

My co-workers and I all ordered their sashimi salad. My boss also ordered the Salmon Cali roll and I also ordered a shrimp tempura hand roll.

Wow, picnic tables now at the Teller Lot!
