The free one hour First Thursday Artwalk Tour features a different itinerary each month, highlighting the diverse talents of local and visiting artists in open studios, and galleries in the Arts District of Downtown San Pedro.
The tour begins at the San Pedro Chamber Board Room Gallery and visits about 3 galleries/studios each month. It provides an opportunity to hear from and talk to the artists and curators about the shows, and each month follows a different itinerary.
The Board Room Gallery features work by member artists of the San Pedro Art Association. And includes all media – oil and watercolor paintings, assemblage, photography and more.
Only twice a year does the tour visit the wonderful gallery of the National Watercolor Society. The NWS presents the best of water media painting, representing a wide range of directions and techniques, from experimental to traditional, and encourages support for watercolor as a vital, enduring and expressive medium. Artwork in this annual Member Exhibition includes paintings by Signature, Life and Associate Members.
And, as a special treat, The Loft (which is a private residence) at Gallery 741 Pacific Ave. will be open. The Penthouse entrance is through cast bronze elevator doors originally in the Cooper Bldg. downtown Los Angeles. There are Art Deco antiques, including a Parker Pen collection, and a Wurlitzer jukebox. For me, one of the highlights of the spacious living area are two classic bumper cars. It’s a beautiful place, but obviously with a touch of whimsy.
Gallery Azul features “The Tarot of Ray Vasquez” These are all news works in which Ray used the Tarot deck to guide his show. The Tarot is centuries old and the ancestor to our modern playing cards. A journey through the Tarot is a journey of the self. Utilizing the Tarot deck, Ray embarked on a journey of the self. He has projected his innter world onto the outer via these artworks. Come and see what is triggered for you.
And, you may want to end your visit to this unique building by checking out the downstairs Cabaret, one of San Pedro’s many music venues. The group performing is a local band, Calle 6.
Studio 347 Presents: “Writers in Search of the Sacred” Kerouac On the Road Cie Gumucio. A multimedia art exhibit by Cie Gumucio explores the works of American writers: Jack Kerouac, Ernest Hemingway, Emily Dickinson and John Steinbeck and the common thread expressed in each – a yearning for an experience of the transcendent. Michael Stearns Studio 347 is located at 347 W. 7th St. in San Pedro
This month at the Croatian Cultural Center will be everyone’s favorite, the ‘Serial Killer of Comedy’ Mike Muratore. This will be Mike’s 4th appearance on the show. Be forewarned, the show can get rather explicit, yet you’re promised that at the end of the night, your face will hurt from laughing too hard! Also on the show will be the hilarious Matt Walker and San Pedro’s own Chris Simpson. You seriously don’t wanna miss this!
