SAVE SAN DIEGO FOOD TRUCKS

We Need YOUR Help to Keep Food Trucks in Downtown San Diego!

Please sign our petition:
Gourmet food trucks are one of the most popular niches of the food and dining industry. Almost every major city in the United States has seen a great benefit from bringing food trucks into their community over the last 5 years.
Fortunately, the city of San Diego has recently approved its first weekly food truck events in the downtown area. Curbside Bites organizes over 12 weekly food truck markets in Southern California including:
Downtown San Diego Lunch  (Wednesdays 11am-2pm)
– West B St between India St & Columbia St
Downtown San Diego Dinner (Thursdays 5:30pm-9pm)
– J St between 3rd Ave and 4th Ave
These weekly food trucks markets feature a mix of San Diego’s most popular food trucks – including trucks that have been featured by The Food Network, The Cooking Channel, QSR Magazine, Energy 103.7, San Diego Reader, KUSI, and more.
Unfortunately, some businesses in the surrounding areas are trying to remove food trucks from downtown San Diego, and we need the residents of San Diego to voice their support for food trucks and these weekly markets.
Curbside Bites has created a more organized way for food trucks to serve downtown San Diego, rather than leaving trucks to individually roam the streets in search of a suitable vending location. Curbside Bites has received approval from the city of San Diego to close the street to host the food trucks once a week at each of the two locations. These events provide a family friendly atmosphere where the community can gather to enjoy a meal and support local small businesses.
Here is your chance to keep food trucks as a part of San Diego’s downtown culture. Sign our petition to support local small businesses and up and coming chefs who are working to bring a sense of community to the city of San Diego.

New OC GFT: WaffnRoll at "Spring Craft Beer Fest" in Santa Fe Springs

This Saturday, a new GFT, @WaffNRoll will be at the Santa Fe Springs “Spring Craft Beer Fest”.  WaffNRoll had some interesting information about their truck:

-WaffNRoll doesn’t use any oil in their waffles, only butter. This results in a crispy waffle.

-Nearly 2 1/2 years of research and development was spent to create the batter mix. When you add sweet ingredients to the waffle you’ll pick up hints of vanilla and malt. However, when you add savory ingredients you notice a more yeast like taste and hints of french bread.

-The owner Brian J. Fast is a successful restaurant owner of the coffee shop Arthur’s Coffee Shop in La Habra.

CREAMY LEMON CURD & BERRIES

BLT + AVOCADO

TANDOORI SPICED CHICKEN

From the creator of @TheLimeTruck, new GFT @CravOnFries

Daniel Shemtob (founder of The Lime Truck and winner of season 2: Great Food Truck Race) has a new venture!  Its CravOn, a new, better-for-you french fry, made with all of the goodness and none of the fried-ness!

CravOn Never Fried French Fries are literally not fried. Instead, they are partially cooked in a blanching process and tossed in olive oil and sea salt prior to being frozen, resulting in a better-for-you french fry made with five natural ingredients, half the fat of regular fries (and none of the remorse), and a delicious, crispy texture that preserves the real potato taste consumers crave (is your mouth watering yet?).

Seabirds chef lands temp gig in Newport (Dec 6-9)

Article in the OC Register by Nancy Luna:

Seabirds Truck founder Stephanie Morgan acknowledges she has been AWOL lately, but for good reason. She’s been cooking up a few deals to expand her popular vegan truck business.

The latest coup: Seabirds is hosting a three-day pop-up event at Whole Foods Market in Newport Beach.

Stephanie Morgan and her vegan food truck arrive at the SOCO Collection Farmers Market on Hyland Avenue in Costa Mesa on Saturday. Seabirds Truck has developed a loyal following of customers who not only show up on Saturdays, but also go to the various other locations the truck moves around to throughout the week.

Morgan is taking over the kitchen at the store’s Back Bay Tavern restaurant Dec. 6-8. The vegan menu will be available 11 a.m.- 10 p.m.

“I’m excited to be in a kitchen and not on wheels,” Morgan said.

In addition to serving signature dishes like her critically reviewed avocado tacos, Morgan said the pop-up menu will offer complicated dishes that can’t be done on the truck, such as butternut squash enchiladas and a persimmon roasted beet carpaccio.

The pop-up will act as a dry run for Morgan, who has plans to open a brick and mortar restaurant in Orange County. No deals have been finalized, but she’s hoping to launch a taco stand in Santa Ana. A larger restaurant is also in the works.

“We’d love to be part of downtown Santa Ana,” she said.

Morgan is also getting into the wholesale market.

She’s selling vegetarian wraps and burritos to San Diego State’s Aztec Market, a student-run convenience store on campus. Morgan said the market contacted them after tasting her food.  “We’d love to get with more schools,” she said. “So many kids want healthier options.

New LA GFT- @GobblesandOinks

There’s a new food truck rolling in LA, serving up comfort food.
Give them a try, and if you have suggestions, tweet or email them.

From Gobbles and Oink:

Gobbles and Oinks is the brainchild of Jeff Breit and Sheri Kendall.  Jeff began perfecting his recipes over 15 years ago attending UCLA tailgate parties.  What started by putting a whole pork loin into his smoker evolved into a smoked tenderloin stuffed with apples, cranberries and other seasonal fruit, then rolled in a mix of honey, mustard, rosemary and other spices.  Jeff has been able to recreate these flavors in the truck and is exited to share his recipe with the public.

Sheri is from the east coast and always had a passion for holiday feasts  and a love of baking.   During family camping trips, her homemade marshmallows took sitting around the campfire to a whole new level.  After some degree of work,   Gobbles and Oinks have been able to recreate this experience in a deep fried  S’more.

Fresh Carved Turkey, a Monte Cristo are just some of the other offerings the truck has to offer.

We look forward to seeing you in the streets!! – Jeff & Sheri

The Club-  fresh sliced turkey, bacon, avocado, sprouts,
lettuce, tomato and smoked garlic aioli

S’mores- deep fried smore..graham crackers, chocolate,
and Sheri’s home made marshmallows.

The Count, a play on the Monte Cristo?

New GFT: Kala Truck hits the streets of OC

My sister Becky is my guest blogger, offering her report on food trucks from the Teller & Michelson lunch lot in Irvine, CA. This is probably the last report from the Teller Lot, as SeabirdsTruck reported that the lot is being converted to a car rental place.

Kala Truck made their Teller Lot debut on Wednesday in a very big and memorable way. They describe their style of cooking as “Artful Mexican Cuisine.” and represented just that.  At the front window, they artfully display each of their tacos (beef, pork, chicken, shrimp) over a bed of colorful tortilla chips (apologies for the plastic wrap over it). Each taco order has 2 items.

Their Patron taco is the most popular of the four choices. After ordering it, I can understand why – tender, flavorful steak served with pico de gallo, creamy guacamole and queso fresco.

Patron taco

The Sweet Piggy taco is also just how it sounded – slow cooked pulled pork that just melt-in-your-mouth with each bite. There is an added note of sweetness that is just enough to excite, but not overwhelm your palate. The jicama slaw on top added a nice crunchy texture.

Sweet Piggy

The creamy roasted poblanos with organic corn is also topped with queso fresco accompanied with a handful of their house made tortilla chips. There is a noticeable theme in that great attention was paid to not only how the food tasted, but also how it looked / presented.

Artful Mexican Cuisine, indeed!

Problanos with corn

To celebrate their debut, a mariachi band came out to perform in front of their truck. For a moment, I thought I was on vacation as I sipped on their refreshing watermelon juice (with a hint of habanero and a twist of lime) and took a moment to enjoy the show.

Watermelon juice w/ habanero

Additional items on their menu (not pictured) were
Cochinita sliders (pulled pork sliders),
Cajun shrimp tacos,
Citrus chicken tacos,
Piggy fries (fries served with pulled pork, guacamole, crema),
Kala quesadilla (stuffed with cremini and button mushrooms, caramelized onions, epazote, mozzarella, pepper and jack cheeses),
Queso fundido (similar to a classic chili, but with chorizo, mixed with cheeses and served with chips)
Citrus quinoa and
Epazote black beans

TLT Food opens November 1

The Lime Truck opened a brick and mortar version in Westwood (that’s near UCLA). The official opening was November 1, but I had a sneak peek of the restaurant and some of the menu items.

The Westwood community will definitely enjoy TLT Food.  The fans of the Lime Truck will recognize the menu, and appreciate there’s a place to sit, enjoy the food, and pair the food with a glass of their favorite alcoholic beverage.  For the non drinkers, TLT Food serves Coca Cola products, and of course, the famous Limeaids.

TLT Food is located at:
1116 Westwood Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA  90024

Metered street parking and pay lots are available.  Cash and credit cards are accepted.
Follow them on twitter at @TLTFood.
