Best food truck cities in America (article from Fodor’s)

Over the past few years, food trucks have become ubiquitous in the country’s biggest cities, from Boston to San Francisco. In addition to convenience, these mobile eateries offer gourmet fare at affordable prices. Whether your taste buds crave spicy Korean tacos at Los Angeles truck Kogi BBQ or freshly baked buttermilk biscuits at Austin’s Biscuits + Groovy, food trucks are a great option for finding a quick—and delicious—meal. Here are our picks for America’s best food truck cities.

Los Angeles
This California metropolis is known for its innovative food scene, and its street fare is no exception: 200 gourmet food trucks offer everything from Korean barbeque to handmade beignets and regularly rotate throughout the city. Munch on crispy fried chicken and honey lavender biscuits at French Chef Ludo Lefebvre’s LudoTruck. East Coast transplants will enjoy the Lobsta Truck, which serves up fresh Maine lobster and crab on a toasted split top roll. For Mexican-inspired soul food, try Sky’s Gourmet Tacos. Kogi BBQ, one of the city’s most popular food trucks, offers spicy Korean tacos that will set your mouth on fire. Cool down with dessert: Coolhaus’ “architecturally inspired” treats include ice cream sandwiches with flavors like balsamic fig and mascarpone, and molten chocolate cake. (Photo: LWY/Flickr)

Austin
Everything’s bigger in Texas, including food trucks: Austin boasts an impressive number of food wagons, trailers, and carts, all with unusual themes. At Hey!…You Gonna Eat or What?, husband and wife team Eric and Lizziane Regan offer gourmet, Southwestern-inspired sandwiches. The Lonestar BLT includes thick-cut slices of applewood-smoked bacon and poblano pepper aioli, and the Texas Mesquite Turkey is topped with fried green tomatoes and homemade jalapeño jelly. At Biscuits + Groovy (pictured here), the menu pays homage to 70s-era music icons: the Aretha Franklin includes three freshly baked buttermilk biscuits with white pepper gravy and sausage, while the M.C. Hammer offers one open-faced buttermilk biscuit with two scrambled eggs and bacon. If you’re in the mood for barbeque, visit Micklethwait for tender beef brisket and pulled pork sandwiches. New York City
Hungry New Yorkers don’t have to look far for quick eats. From Times Square to the Upper West Side, food trucks are scattered throughout the city and provide diverse fare fit for any palate. Kimchi Taco Truck (seen here) features classic street food with a unique twist, including the Tofu Edamame Falafel Taco and Fresh Kimchi Bowls with beef, pork, or chicken. For Taiwanese-style fried chicken, look no further than Bian Diang. The truck serves pan-fried chicken and pork, served atop a mountain of jasmine rice. For something lighter, stop by The Cinnamon Snail. The truck offers a seasonal menu with everything from blue corn pancakes with pine nut butter to maple mustard tempeh on grilled spelt bread. Seattle
When it rains in Seattle, it pours—but that doesn’t stop hungry eaters. Locals and visitors alike enjoy the city’s 50 food trucks, which serve everything from tacos to Filipino cuisine. At Where Ya At Matt (pictured here), Southern comfort food has never tasted so good. Dishes include shrimp po’ boy sandwiches and Cajun jambalaya, and the truck also offers authentic pecan pie and beignets for dessert. Off the Rez features Native American-inspired fare, including sweet vanilla pear butter fry bread and tacos with chicken chili verde. For Hawaiian-Korean food, stop by Marination. The truck offers stuffed-to-the-brim tacos and sliders, cooked to order and topped with a tangy slaw. (Photo: Jeanine Anderson )

Washington, D.C.
Most D.C. food trucks are located in the downtown area, offering busy politicos and visitors the chance to sample the city’s street fare. Tasty Kabob features chicken, lamb and veggie kabobs and a rotating menu of specials. Hawaiian food is hard to find in the nation’s capital, but Hula Girl serves some of the best: The truck’s grilled-to-order teriyaki steak, chicken, and tofu are menu mainstays, and lunch includes bánh mì-style sandwiches and salads. Pho lovers will enjoy Pho Junkies, where you can order a bowl of steaming soup with your choice of meat. For a sweet treat, visit Goodies Frozen Custard & Treats. The city’s first and only “vintage mobile eatery” serves old-fashioned frozen custard from a 60-year-old Metro Van. (Photo: majunznk / Flickr)
St. Louis
Often considered a culinary underdog, St. Louis is gaining momentum as a popular food truck city. Guerrilla Street Food serves Filipino-inspired cuisine with fresh, seasonal ingredients. The truck’s rotating menu includes dishes like slow-roasted pork asado and sausage with chilis. For fresh tacos and sandwiches, look no further than Cha Cha Chow. The truck prepares all of its spicy street fare onboard, and offers dishes like curried sweet potato tacos and handmade burgers topped with poblano peppers and spiced ketchup. Go! Gyro! Go!—the city’s only Greek food truck—features traditional dishes such as chicken souvlaki and grilled pita with homemade tzatziki. (Photo: MBK / Flickr)
Portland, Ore.
In terms of sheer number of food trucks, Portland takes the cake. The city boasts over 600 food carts that are grouped into pods, making it easy to sample a variety of dishes. For Chinese dumplings with a creative twist, stop by The Dump Truck. Popular flavors include the bacon cheeseburger with a housemade secret sauce, and vegan-friendly potato curry with coconut sauce. The Frying Scotsman serves authentic British fish and chips, complete with a side of peas and curry sauce. Eat waffles all day at Solar Waffle Works, Portland’s first solar-powered food truck. Late night eaters flock to Potato Champion, which serves up classic Canadian comfort food like poutine. (Photo: Erica Schroeder/Dreamstime.com)

GFTS to be introduced at Disney World (FL)

Click here for the original aricle by AJ Wolfe/Disney Food Blog
When we first heard the new plans for the re-imagining of the Downtown Disney in Walt Disney World, we were ecstatic. I’m looking forward to seeing all of the exciting developments that Disney Springs will hold. But none excited us more than the suggestion that we would see a hot trend coming home to roost right here in Walt Disney World. The Food Truck Craze has finally arrived!

Sure, we have seen the popular trend catch fire in cities all over. Orlando has a booming food truck industry that we already love.

But Food Truck Row, as it was named in the first details that emerged about Disney Springs, proved to be unique, in that it promised to bring some of the most beloved Disney foods from around the World. And within months of its announcement, we saw the roll out of the mini-fleet of take its place in and around the Downtown Disney Area.

As you’d expect, we’ve had the chance to take a closer look at all four trucks, and now we can’t wait to tell you a little more about them. Each truck is themed to the four parks of Walt Disney World, and yet carries further themeing that I find enchanting.

Superstar Catering Food Truck

First to arrive at Downtown Disney was Superstar Catering Food Truck, which brings a touch of Disney’s Hollywood Studios to Downtown Disney.

You’ll notice the same classic old Hollywood, art deco touch in the truck’s colors and decorative touches that you see as you stroll down Hollywood Boulevard in the park. Aqua and coral dress out the exterior of the truck, with plenty of functional, stainless steel touches.

The menu features different variations of meatballs. Turkey Sausage and Golden Raisin Meatballs are served atop Soft Polenta. The Spinach and Feta Beef Meatball Sandwich offers a Greek twist on a fun sandwich option. Even the kid’s option is a Meatball Slider, served with Marinara and Provolone.

On our first visit to Superstar, we opted for the delicious-sounding Lamb Meatball Flatbread Sandwich. Three Lamb Meatballs are served on a pliable Pita with Arugula-Fennel Salad. Dressed with a generous amount of flavorful Tzatziki and a Vegetable Relish, it’s a delicious option for a light dinner!

Namaste Cafe Food Truck

The next to debut was Namaste Cafe Food Truck, which highlights tastes and flavors that you might find around Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
The truck echoes the exotic feel of the park, particularly the Asia portion of it. Scenes from the Maharajah Jungle Trek and other beautiful animal depictions cover the panels, and the Tree of Life occupies a prominent spot.

Dishes from Namaste Cafe also offer Asian flavors and are all served with a combination of Basmati Rice and Naan, an Indian flatbread. Colorful Pickled Vegetables garnish each of the selections.

When we visited the truck for the first time, we couldn’t resist trying one of my very favorite dishes, Butter Chicken! Tender with the complex flavors of tomato and curry, the dish had less gravy than I normally associate with its counterpart served in Sanaa at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. But that’s perfect for a portable option! We enjoyed it immensely.

Fantasy Fare Food Truck

However, the truck that I couldn’t wait to arrive was Fantasy Fare Food Truck!
Red paint gives the truck a carnival air in keeping with the Storybook Circus section of New Fantasyland. And that’s appropriate, as Fantasy Fare celebrates the Culinary Traditions of Magic Kingdoms around the World!

And the menu reflects that theme well, with Glass Noodle Salad from Hong Kong Disneyland, as well as the Croque Monsieur served at Magic Kingdom’s Be Our Guest.

But the real excitement is over Hand Dipped Corn Dogs inspired by the ones from Disneyland! The specialties have been a favorite of mine for years. And served with House-Made Potato Chips, this is a fantastic option!

World Showcase of Flavors Food Truck

The fourth and final truck, World Showcase of Flavors, celebrates the rich food heritage of what has become known as the Festival Park — Epcot.
This sleek black and green truck has a more of a vintage, sophisticated feel. The painted travel stickers that decorate the facade echo the fun passport stamps you gather in your passport during the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival each Fall!

The menu for World Showcase of Flavors features selections from the 2013 Epcot Food and Wine Festival. Pierogies served with Kielbasa and Grass Fed Sliders are two of the options. We chose to sample the third — the Lobster Roll from the Hops & Barley Kiosk. It was delicious!
But we also love the Wines served by the glass, just like at the Festival. Each of the selections pair well with the food offerings, so you can celebrate the Food and Wine Festival throughout the whole year!
So there you have it! Your tour of Food Truck Row at Downtown Disney! Be sure to keep an eye out for the trucks, which naturally change locations. However, we’ve found them serving most of the time from the area near Cirque de Soleil and House of Blues, during evening hours.
So far, which is your favorite?
